I've always been super drawn to the Victorian glass houses at Kew Garden's, and the incredible plant life that grows inside. The botanic garden has inspired past projects throughout my degree, particularly my major project, that was exhibited at New Designers in summer 2019.
I love the combination of the intricate structures of the glass houses and the organic shapes and textures of the plants within them. This has inspired a whole series of Gouache paintings, based on key features of Kew, such as the Palm house, and Waterlily House.
Gouache paintings of The Waterlily House, Palm House wing, Palm House arch and Cacti in the Princess of Wales Conservatory.
In these paintings, I've used negative space to illustrate the architecture of each glass house structure. I also wanted to illustrate the broad variety of plants that belong within each building, which shows the diversity of life on our planet, something the botanic garden as a whole, really puts emphasis on.
