ST. FAGANS MUSEUM - EXHIBITION 2019

Updated: Dec 15, 2020

This project was part of a live brief with the St Fagans National Museum of Wales. After in depth research and drawing on site at St Fagans, I was really drawn to the bold, red farmhouse. I spent time sketching and drawing it's features, such as the building itself, the floral wallpaper and interesting artefacts inside, and the organic forms both inside and outside the house.

I began experimenting with this imagery through enamelling, a process in which wet process enamel is poured or sprayed onto coated steel, and etched into by hand with a variety of tools. It's fired in a kiln to harden it, where it can then be screen printed with designs and imagery before being re-fired. Throughout experimentation, I found a love for the pouring technique, and began layering colours, creating interesting abstract shapes, and revealing layers underneath through etching.

I designed and created steel panels that mimic the shape of the slate fence that runs throughout the grounds, particularly outside Kennixton Farmhouse. The steel is enamelled, with hand drawn and printed designs that decorate it, as well as embroidery. The enamelled panels capture Kennixton's distinctive colours, details and patterns that can be found within and around the house.

The piece was exhibited within Kennixtion Farmhouse as part of the exhibition 'Re-Imagining the Archive' that took place in April 2019.
